RECOVER A BADLY DAMAGED CD OR DVD USING ISO BUSTER
CDs and DVDs are fairly durable, but not entirely impervious to damage from scratching - and this can happen easily if discs are not properly stored and transported (e.g. in non-abrasive sleeves). Once
scratched, discs often become prone to read errors - with audio discs, this usually just results in some skipping, but it can mean the loss of important Fortunately, it is possible to recover damaged CDs and DVDs by using the right tools. IsoBuster is capable of reading damaged discs and creating a new image file that can be burned to a new disc. Most burning software is not capable of reading badly damaged discs, and will abort mid-process due to errors. IsoBuster is not dissuaded by these errors and contains specialised algorithms that can retrieve data from problematic discs.
For an introduction to the excellent IsoBuster application, and to learn how to retrieve your precious data from badly damaged CDs and DVDs, check out our simple guide below.
- 1)Access the Related Download link for this article and grab the IsoBuster installer file. When this has finished downloading, run the file to kick-off installation and follow the on-screen prompts.
- 2)Insert your damaged CD or
DVD into the drive connected to your computer, then launch IsoBuster using any of the shortcuts added during installation. IsoBuster will proceed to read the contents of the disc, and displays the tree structure on the left hand side of the interface. - 3)Click Options and choose Image Files. In the Cuesheet options, check the Always after a CD or DVD Image is Created
option . Optionally choose Always/Prompt under the option "Select when an MD5 checksum will be created.". This option allows you to verify the integrity of the data after theextraction has been performed. Click OK to continue. - 4)Right-click the disc icon on the left hand tree structure and choose
Extract CD (Image) and Raw if the disc is a CD, or Extract DVD (Image) and User Data if the disc is a DVD. - 5)Select the
location and filename of the ISO file you are going to create in the Extract File dialog that appears, and click Save. - 6)Wait whilst IsoBuster proceeds to extract the information from the damaged disc. Because the application uses slow passes, to reduce the likelihood of errors, this process can take some time.
- 7)After the extraction process, IsoBuster requests where to save the cuesheet file. It is recommended to save this in the same location as the ISO file, with the same filename (except the extension will be .cue and not .ISO). Click OK to continue.
- 8)If you chose to use MD5 checksum verification in
Step 3, IsoBuster now requests a filename and location for this. Use the same filename and location as the ISO and cuesheet file, but with the extension .md5. - 9)With the files created by IsoBuster,
you can now make a new version of the damaged disc using any CD/DVD burning software (including IsoBuster itself).
